Toy Lobster Boat

Well it is toy-making season again and the pictures below are of a type of lobster boat called a “razor case”. This design can still be see occasionally Down East, but are a leftover from the pre-WWII era.

Toy Razor Case

The razor case was narrower than modern lobster boats and had more of a spoon bow than the hollow entry common today, but they required less power to drive them. Typically they carry a riding sail on the afterdeck to keep them headed into wind and swell while hauling. I decided to leave the sail off the toy since it would be more in the way of little hands setting traps than anything else. The half-round, lath, traps took nearly as much time as the boat, but you can’t fish without traps.
